This document shall serve as a guide as well as a reference on creating a Furscape character. It is by no means comprehensive, but legally binding in terms of MUCK policy. If your character does not comply with the requirements in this guide, a solution for the problem must be found promptly.
Players are encouraged to choose one of the various species the Furscape universe has to offer, as listed in the Species Database; the most prominent of these being Sol Sector Recoms, Annyrion Recoms, but there is quite a few more, and each of the aforementioned 'species' is in fact a general genus of beings, including all sorts of sub-species and nice-filling populations. If you are reading this text, chances are you are a Furry Fan or Furry Lifestyler, either way it is recommended that your chose one of the Recom species, which are just what 20th and 21st century societies referred to as 'Furries'.
There is no restrictions on gender for Recoms, because genetic engineering allows for an arbitrary absence or presence of gender features - both male and female. In fact, the Chakat subspecies of the Recoms is comprised entirely of hermaphrodites. For other species, please refer to their database entries to see how their gender systems work.
Usually the next step in creating a character is chosing its abilities. Instead of making an endless list of things you can do - and literally, that is endless because MUCKs allow the player an infinite degree of freedom - there will be a concise enumeration of things a character should not be like.
(except for very few exceptions, possessing such abilities is a violation of Furscape's theme policy)
Some abilities are popular especially with new, inexperienced players. These traits of character are generally bound to cause trouble, ranging from throwing the MUCK's game dynamics off balance, as well as cause general discontent among other, less 'endowed' players.
As stated above, our setting is not designed around the existance of magic, powerful psionics (beyond limited telepathy), ultra-tech, super powers, or mythical creatures such as kitsunes. You should not play such characters, and if you think you really must, make sure that the Roleplay wizards approve of your character first (it's rather likely they don't!). As of December 20th, 2001, any player found with an unapproved magic user, alien, or super-tech user, will be asked to change their character design or not be allowed to participate roleplay.
Characters with special abilities should always be played in a way that does not disrupt the hard-SF roleplay that is more central to Furscape's theme.
Choosing a profession for your character can be difficult. With the new space system L.I.T.E. installed, ships will require larger crews to be operated, so instead of starting your one-fur mercenary enterprise, please not that anything above a class 1 ship will need a crew and the leader of that company/operation will have to pay them real credits sooner or later!
Special professions, such as Doctors, Barkeepers, Medics, Shop Clerks, Cooks & Bakers, Social Workers, Game Wardens, Daycare Mothers, etc., are hopelessly understaffed, so if you choose to create a player that fits into one of these categories, chances are good that you will receive some privileges for being 'original' and, more important, a significant factor in improving this MUCK's game balance. We simply have too many heroes and too few commoners.
Parts of this guide were copied verbatim from Matrix' theme guide, which was compiled by RPstaff and the Headwizards at an earlier point in time.
