Finally something new to report. . . It took me a lot longer than I ever expected, but I finally hit the books and learned how to program Mac OS X -- or to be more precise, Objective-C and Cocoa. The learning curve was steep at first, but after getting over that hump I found Cocoa remarkably easy and fun to work with. Obviously I still have a lot to learn, but I was impressed with how much easier this environment is to work with, compared to my old Amiga. I'm beginning to like the Objective-C language, too.

The last couple of weeks I've spent cobbling together my very first non-trivial Cocoa program. . . The game of Sea Battle! It's a simple-minded little game, but it was enough to serve as a great learning exercise for me. If it looks familiar to any of you old-timers, there might be good reason. Sea Battle is a conversion from a BASIC game by Vince Erickson, published in the book More BASIC Computer Games -- in 1979! Untangling some of that ancient spaghetti code was a challenge.
