Two very big
personalities in Slash V history...Scott and Randy Martin |
The first ASCA Stock Dog Chairman Bob Carrillo
giving a seminar in the late seventies or early eighties. No one will
ever know the "cussin and discussion" that went on in the seventies
over ASCA's new Stock Dog Program! Some hard-headed people were in
there pretty much literally battling out the details including Bob, Kathy,
Barb, Ernie, Marcia, Walt, to name just a few without using last names!
I might possibly have been there too! I remember Bob telling Barb he had
framed her latest letter in asbestos. Now, nearly three decades later,
we were all sometimes right, sometimes wrong but what if no one had cared
enough to create what was the first organized Stock Dog program in America
offering recognition to outstanding dogs of a breed?

Dick Sorensen was one of ASCA's early Stock Dog
judges in the seventies and eighties. He and Leslie (Colorado) competed in
ASCA's early trials with Leslie winning the first ASCA Invitational trial in
California with CH Sorensen's Cherry Brandy OTDc |

TX shared by K Barr, Terry Martin & Russ Ford. |

A pair from the past! Ernie Hartnagle with
his beloved CH Las Rocosa Leslie CD OTDs. Leslie was whelped in 1972,
sired by CH Las Rocosa Shiloh and out of Hartnagle's Fritzie Taylor.
Ernie was President of ASCA at a pivotal time for ASCA, It was the
time when the Stock Dog program was new and ASCA was young and fragile -
and poor. I remember when Ernie took a huge step and appointed a
"conformation person" to revise the young Stock Dog program using
reams of input from working people. Lo and behold he made the right
choice using an unbiased uninvolved individual to do the writing. Good
leadership I will never forget. |
|
Colorado Pioneers in the Stock Dog Program from
the seventies & eighties. Jim Foster (Stock Dog Judge), Leslie
Sorensen, Sue Foster & Dick Sorensen (Stock Dog Judge). Jim &
Sue had Powder River Aussies & Jim's CH Powder River CIty Slicker ATDsd
OTDc STDh was whelped in 1975 and one of the most powerful cattle dogs ever. |
|

Some of the important people stay behind the
scenes. Jean Carrillo and Elaine Hartnagle enjoying a good view of a
trial. Jean became an ASCA President and I will never forget her
dedication to detail when she, although definitely from a Stock Dog family,
led us through three tedious days of writing the first ASCA Show Program
from scratch. Until that time the show rules were pretty non-existent.
EVERY ASCA President since 1957 deserves a medal for some special
contributions! |

There
might not have been much Aussie activitiy in Texas in the early days if
not for these three! No telling how many runs they have timed.
scores they have added, books they have kept straight. Left to
right: Wanda Bogy (now Jones), Joyce Reaves & Jo Kimes in the
80's. |
