Frequently Asked Question

How do I use the Mail Reader in Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.0 for Windows 3.x?

If the Mail Reader is not currently installed, use the document: "Installing Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.0 for Windows 3.x."

After the reader is installed, you should see the following items in the program manager:

Double-click on Hometown Computing to establish the connection.

Enter your username and password if prompted and hit Connect.

Double-click on the Mail icon to start the Mail program.

Enter a User name and Password for this mail reader connection. Note that this User name and Password is different than the User name and Password used to log on to Hometown Computing and is different than the User name and Password used for Email reading. This is simply used to control who can use the Mail Reader program on this computer. The User name and Password can be anything you want as long as you remember what they are.

Click on OK.

This welcome screen tells you a little about what you will need to know next.

Click on Continue.

Fill in the blanks with your real name, your email address and make up a name for your computer. Set the Protocols as shown. Click on OK....


Set type POP3 server to mail.htcomp.net.

Set the Login name to your user login for mail, usually it's the part to the left of the @ in your email address.

Enter your email Password.

Click on OK.....

Set the SMTP server to mail.htcomp.net.

Click on OK.

The mail reader is now installed. Use the on-line help in the mail reader for help using the program.
