ISAAC G. "BLACK IKE" GRISHAM
Parents: __?__ Grisham and
Nancy __?__
Grandfather: George
Gresham, Sr. -- Traditionally
Wives: (1) Elizabeth Mason
(2) Sarah Elizabeth
Mason
(3) Sarah Jane
Beggs
Born: 26 August, Lawrence County, TN
Died: 05 June, 1927,
Henderson County, TX
Second Generation
2. Isaac G. "Black Ike" GRISHAM, was born 26 August,
1837, Lawrence County., TN. Isaac married (1) Elizabeth
MASON on 27 January, 1859, by J. G.
Irvine, JP in Tishomingo County. MS. I cannot find the
source for the statement that Isaac G. married Elizabeth Mason in the
home of A. J. Grisham. Elizabeth MASON
was born in 1838 in AL or TN.
It appears that Elizabeth Mason was enumerated in 1850 as
Elizabeth
Grisham in the home of Andrew Jackson "Jack" GRISHAM,
Sr. and Sarah Gillie OLIVE. In 1860 Isaac
G. and Elizabeth (Mason) Grisham were enumerated in an household
immediately following the household of Andrew Jackson and Gillie (Olive) (Mason)
Grisham. In 1860 Elizabeth (Mason) Grisham was 10 years
older than Elizabeth Grisham in 1850. Gillie
was only 14 years older than this Elizabeth. According to a letter from
Hattie Grisham to Clara Elsie Fergusson Crain on 24 September, 1964,
Gillie married a Mr. Mason prior to marrying our ancestor.
Hattie also
identified our ancestor as "Isaac" instead of Andrew Jackson
Grisham.
Hence it could be that Isaac G. and
Elizabeth (Mason)
Grisham assumed the roll of parents of the orphaned children of Andrew
Jackson and Gillie (Olive) (Mason) Grisham.
Elizabeth (Mason) Grisham died before 1863. According to
tradition, Elizabeth hung herself after the death of her second
child. The death of the child was the result of Elizabeth's
administering the wrong medicine to her sick child.
IF
Elizabeth (Mason) Grisham and Isaac G. Grisham assumed the
roll of parenting Andrew Jackson and Gillie's children,
and
IF
Elizabeth died shortly after the death of her
daughter, Mary M. GRISHAM, who died 11 June, 1862,5
then Andrew Jackson and Gillie died by 1862.
Isaac G. "Black Ike" Grisham married (2) Sarah
Elizabeth MASON about 1863, in Tishomingo County., MS. Sarah
Elizabeth was born in TN, died in 1880, Prentiss County, MS.
I have been told that the 1880 Census reported that Sarah Elizabeth
had hung herself with a well rope.
Isaac G. "Black
Ike" married (3) 4 October, 1881, in Prentiss Co., MS., Sarah Jane
BEGGS. who was born in December, 1858, in MS.
Isaac G. "Black Ike" was enumerated
in 1860 in old Tishomingo County, MS; in 1870 and 1880 in Prentiss
County, MS, and in 1910 in Henderson County, TX.
Isaac G. died 05 June, 1927,
Henderson County, TX. "Black Ike" enlisted in the Confederate Army on
March 6, 1862, 3rd LT, Co. B., 32 Regiment, MS Infantry.
Sarah: Dr. Lee
Williamson, of Abilene, TX, in a telephone
conversation of 8 November, 1987, reported that according to the family Bible (which he has),
this lady was Sarah Elizabeth Mason--not Sarah O. According to the 1880
US Census, Sarah was dead. She had hung herself with well rope.
