Church of God Faith of AbrahamGatesville, TexasChurch HistoryThe Gatesville Church of God had it's beginning before 1900. R.A. Warren of DeQueen, Arkansas moved to Coryell County and met with a small community church which soon took opposition to his beliefs and challenged him to a debate. Bro. Warren invited A.S. Bradley of DeQueen to come and help him defend the truth. The debate was held in a school near Ater, Texas about 1890. The debate resulted in a number of conversions to the truth and the first group of believers in this area. In 1903 the brotherhood built a meeting house North of Ater on Bro. Warren's farm and called it Warren Chapel. Bob Warren served as pastor until he moved to West Texas.A.S. Bradley, known as a power house for the truth, traveled many miles teaching and contending for the truth. He became the part time minister for the Gatesville Church for a number of years. The economic depression had its effect upon the Church.. The membership was forced to migrate in search of work. The minister found it difficult to travel or minister as he should. The death of the older ministers and members was felt in the lack of leadership and regular worship services. In 1946-47 M.W. Lyon, national evangelist, spent the winter traveling and locating members of the Church of God in Texas. In June of 1947 the Texas Conference was re-established and Emory Macy was hired as state evangelist and part time minister of the Gatesville Church. The brethren established a building fund in 1947 to build a church of their own in Gatesville. Four years later the new brick building was dedicated on August 19, 1951 by Pastor Emory Macy. A parsonage and fellowship hall with a kitchen was build in later years, along with numerous improvements to the building. Recent improvements include a beautiful new fellowship building with a kitchen and many classrooms which was completed in the Summer of 1998. The Pastors of the Church have been Emory Macy, Richard
Worley, Dean
