From the Research of Annabelle Pennington Nobles Stone:

"Jack Henderson was a river boat builder for Ohio River boats. According to his grand-daughter, Vida Holly Henderson East, he was one-half Indian (she did not know which tribe).

He was undoubtedly not a very good father and husband. After the death of his first wife, Lucy Long, his mother-in-law, Lucyan Payne Long and her two sons, J. Newt Long and William (Billy) Long, took or kidnapped the above listed children from him and brought them to Texas."

From the Research of Annabelle Pennington Nobles Stone:

"When Jeff was a very small child, his mother died. His grandmother Lucyan Payne Long and her two sons, J. Newt Long and William Long took or kidnapped Jeff and his brothers and Sister from his father (James J. Henderson). (Two suggested reasons for why Lucy Long felt it necessary to take the children away from their father were: 1. the father was 1/2 Indian and the Long family thought him unworthy of the children and 2. Jack Henderson had remarried and they did not approve of this marriage.) Jeff and his brothers, George and Jim, and sister, Polly, were brought down the Ohio River to the Mississippi, down the Mississippi to __________, then overland to Texas. They sold their boat at the point of landing on the Mississippi River and bought a wagon and team for the trip to Texas. They were in Elgin, Texas for a time. Both George and Jim Henderson died and were buried there. When the Longs left Elgin, Texas, they moved to Burnet County, Texas and homesteaded a farm about 8 miles southeast of Lampasas, Texas, near a place called Bachelor's Peak. Jeff and Polly Henderson were reared by the Longs on this farm.

Jeff Davis Henderson married Mary Ann Roten on October 5, 1884. He built a log cabin for Mary Ann and himself somewhere on Lucy Creek, near Kempner. They lived there for a number of years before they moved back to the farm near Bachelor's Peak. Billy Long built their house on the "Old Home Place". All of their children were born either on the farm on Lucy Creek or the farm near Bachelor's Peak.

Jeff was a religious man. He was kind and gentle. He never turned a tramp away from his door. Mary Ann Roten Henderson said that she "has cooked many bisquits for tramps and travelers who passed their home".

Jeff was a tall man, a little over six feet tall. He had dark hair and grey eyes. He was a quiet man.

Jeff bought the "Old Home Place" from the other heirs of J. Newt and William (Billy) Long after their deaths. He farmed this land until he retired and moved to Lampasas in Aug., 1920. He bought a house on the east side of Lampasas, Texas. This house stood on what is now 1205 Cloud Street.

Jeff bought controlling interest in the telephone company in 1921, and ran this company until 1931.

Jeff Davis Henderson died as a result of a stroke. He had two strokes which he survived, dying of the third. He died on Sept. 18, 1933."

~~~~~~~~~~~
Jeff Davis Henderson kept a World Atlas. In it, he practiced writing and drew pictures (probably on his trip down the Mississippi River to Texas). One drawing is of a paddle boat. Other writing is of the meaning of tarot cards (these are written by a more experienced writer - my guess is by Lucy Annie Payne Long). He also practiced writing his name. While it is very fragile, as of 1995, it still exists and is in the possession of his great grandaughter, Shirley Ann Nobles Erickson. (Photo images were taken & a CD was made by Richard Seitz).
He was a forward thinking man and not afraid to try new things. He used a typewriter to write letters to his children and encouraged his grandchildren to write him a few lines. Two of those letters are transcribed here with spelling and punctuation as presented:
" Lampasas Texas
Obituary from Lampasas newspaper:
" J. D. Henderson Passed Away Tuesday Evening
_____
J. D. Henderson, who had been a resident of this section for sixty years and of Lampasas since 1920, died at his home in the east part of town Tuesday evening, September 18, at 7:33 o'clock. He had been in poor health for several years and during the past year he had been confined to his home and bed several times. His last sicness lasted for ten days and it was known from the time he was taken that he could get well. His children had all been with him for several days awaiting the time of his going and doing all they could to help in the last hours of his life.
Funeral services were conducted at the Church of Christ Wednesday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock by Elder Robert Howell, and the body was laid to rest in Oak Hill cemetery. The following were pall bearers: H. H. Bell, Frank Tittle, Fred Peeler, M. W. Crider, Willie Yazell, J. E. Word.
Mr. Henderson was a native of Indiana, just across the line from Kentucky. Following the death of his father [corrected to read "mother"] when just a child he lived with his grandmother in Kentucky, coming to Texas with her and his uncle at the age of about seven, and to Burnet county at about the age of 12 years. Since that time he had lived on the place which he owned at his death in the Bachelor Peak community till he came to Lampasas in 1920. He was engaged in farming all his life till 1921 when he and his wife became operators of the Rural telephone office and remained with that work for 9 1-2 years, retiring about two years ago.
October 5, 1894 Mr. Henderson married Miss Annie Hoten [corrected to read "Roten"] of Burnet county and to this union were bron [should be "born"] 8 children. Mrs. Henderson and seven of these children survive his passing. The children are: Mrs. Vida East, Mrs. Lucy Rutledge and Wylie Henderson of Austin, Mrs. Velma Nobles of Hico, J. D. Henderson Jr. of Evant, Mrs. Lola Cox of Bernet, mrs. Ophia Barnes of Houston. There are also 18 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. One nephew who lives in Oklahoma is the only surviving relative besides the immediate family.
Mr. Henderson was a good man, always taking his stand on the right side, so far as he knew it, of every moral issue. People who have known him all his life and others who have known him all their lives speak of him as one of our very best citizens. He had been a faithful member of the Church of Christ for the past forty years and lived true to his convictions."
Notes for MARY ANNIE ROTEN:
From the Research of Annabelle Pennington Nobles Stone:
"Mary Ann Roten, first child of Robert Henry Roten and Sally Holly Renfro, was born on September 12, 1867, in Hillsboro, Texas. She had two brothers, Les Roten and Henry roten and one sister, Gertrude Roten. She had a half-sister, Viola Craig, daughter of _______ Craig and Sally Holly Renfro Roten. she also had a half-sister, Ruth Roten (Wroten), daughter of Robert Henry Roten (Wroten) and _____________.
Mary Ann Roten married Jeff Davis Henderson on October 5, 1884, at Kempner, Texas. Jeff built her and himself a log cabin on the Lucy River when they first married. They lived there for a few years and then moved to the "Old Home Place" near Bachelor's Peak. All of their children were born on these farms.
Mary Ann Roten Henderson was an amazing woman. The following was a tribute to her on her 91st birthdate.
"Sears Good Citizen Salute"
"How good can a citizen be!! Sears salutes a woman who has spent her entire life serving and helping others. Mrs. J. D. Henderson just recently celebrated her 91st birthday. During her busy 91 years, Mrs. Henderson has settled territory .... cared for the sick .... delivered babies .... and raised ten children, eight of her own and two which she took in. She was born in Hillsboro in 1867, married in 1884 and moved to Burnet County .... to a community called Bachelor's Peak, named for three bachelors who settled there. Mrs. Henderson was the only woman in the community. In the absence of a doctor, she cared for the sick and 'delivered half of the babies in the community'. Throughout her life, she has never been too busy to help someone else .... even while raising ten children. She sews ... she reads .... and at 91 years of age is still helping and serving people. Mrs. Henderson is a living example of a good citizen .... She's been a good citizen all her life .... Sears salutes you.... Mrs. Henderson."
To further prove her stamina and determination, Mary Ann Roten Henderson fell and broke her hip in 1953. She was then 86 years old. For a lesser person, this would have meant sure death, but not for Mary Ann. She came back with determination and not a year later was walking around (she did concede to use a cane) doing the dishes and helping around the households of the daughter she happened to be visiting at the time.
When she was about 93 years old, Mary Ann became angry with the daughter she was staying at the time, and while the daughter was gone to town, packed her own bag, called a taxi and went by bus some 75 miles away to another daughter's house. She didn't bother to leave word as to where she was going and it took a few phone calls to find her.
In November, 1962, she was still going strong at the youthful age of 95. She had times when she could not remember, but she was most helpful to the research of the Henderson and Roten families."
