From Judy Russell:

"At the estate sale of Benjamin Eddins, Sr. (father of Fanny Eddins who married Samuel Walker, Jr.) Leonard Nobles bought one "lot of spunn cotten" for 8.56. So we know where he was sometime near Mar 1819 when the sale results were taken to the courthouse.

Frances Bateman found and copied the whole list of buyers recently while she was in Athens, AL. Lots and lots of familiar names: Easter, Walker, Norris, Holloway, Eddins, Ward, Tillman, etc. "

From the Research of Annabelle Pennington Nobles Stone:

"Leonard Nobles had 5 slaves not far from Duvals Bluff, Arkansas. When they were freed, he gave them a choice: to go or stay and farm as tenants. Two left and three stayed.

Leonard Nobles volunteered for the Civil War when his brothers came back on furlow.

?[Len, Jr. was just a boy hunting & found a tomahawk. Fate(?) (Layfayette) still has the tomahawk.]"

(So here is Samuel and your John. Don't know about the age of Samuel.

Perhaps they put 42, although it sure looked like 47. Also don't know about

the SC birthplace. Francis gives the same birthplace in this census. I

think the census taker must have asked the question that implied it was for

the father of the subject since Sarah also does not give her birthplace,

which is AL, but her mother's.)

she remarry? )

She names one of her children Roxanna, I'll bet this is her brother or

(Is this "Our" Griffey? Although his first name is different the age is

correct for both according to their marriage record and the census taker

could have heard Eliza from Louisa. Something to consider.)

Notes for FRANCES WILLERSON NOBLES:

Mary Anne Rick via Pam Sanders:

Rufus E. Buffaloe married the widow of James L. Cox. A gurardian was appointed in December 1853 for Francies Cox Buffaloe's children, John S. Cox, Martha Isabella Cox, James L. Cox, Charles B. Cox and William L. Cox all under 21 years of age. (their son Milton has died by now)

On January 09, 1860 in Arkansas County, AR, Frances M. Buffaloe, now the wife of Rufus E. Buffaloe, put in an application with the Probate Court for appointment of William R. Wofford of Arkansas County as guardian of Martha Isabella Cox. A petition was filed on June 29, 1860 in Arkansas County asking to remove guardian ship of Frances' children by a former marriage from Alabama to Arkansas.

Rufus and Francis were shown on the 1860 Arkansas County census with a daugher named Homagama, age 3 and Martha's children by her marriage to James L. Cox. Homagama on this census is presumed to be Homa Jean Buffalo. (Excerpts from Book Titled: Trail of the Buffaloe/Buffalow by Robert Buffaloe)

Rufus was the runt of the family, quite a short man but he loved to play the fiddle and fight. As a fighter, he was considered dangerous and after having seriously wounding a man, Rufus fled and his family never heard from him again (he left circa 1863)

On the 1870 Arkansas County Census, Rufus and Frances ae not shown, but James Cox is shown as head of the household, with his brother William (probably Frances and James L. Cox's/Cocke’s sons) and Jennie Buffalo, age 16 and Eliza Buffalo, age 7. It is suspected that Jennie is the girl named Homagama on the 1860 Census and Eliza is Louisa Melvina Buffalo, her sister.

Rufus served in the Company K, 1st Colquitts Arkansas Infantry as a Private, during the Civil War. It is believed Rufus may have died in the war. Frances remarried a Francis Ashley on Sept. 28, 1864 in Arkansas County AR. Then married Unknown Cowan by 1886.

(Mary Ann Rick told me that she would have to look this up for me, because she remembers taking their ages from 1850 Census, which shows their ages as 40 and 26 also, as below) an aterisk is denoted on the record, which I believe someone added the information...

Note: James may have been born after Ellender/Eleanor. Court records show his name following hers and he was also listed as a minor in the settlement of his brother Charles' estate while Eleanor was shown as of age. [MAR]

From Pam Sanders:

"On the 1870 Arkansas County Census, Rufus and Frances ae not shown, but James Cox is shown as head of the household, with his brother William (probably Frances and James L. Cox's/Cocke’s sons) and Jennie Buffalo, age 16 and Eliza Buffalo, age 7. It is suspected that Jennie is the girl named Homagama on the 1860 Census and Eliza is Louisa Melvina Buffalo, her sister."[Frances Cox,Buffaloe.FTW]

Annie May Cowan believes David Cowan remarried, to Frances Nobles Cox, following the death of Elizaeth in 1875. The document that suggests this is hard to read, and she is unable to tell if the date is 1875 or 1878, which is the year David died. I have yet to confirm this marriage thru Llano County court records.

The document that suggests this is hard to read, and she is unable to tell if the date is 1875 or 1878, which is the year David died. I have yet to confirm this marriage thru Llano County court records.

1870 Arkansas Census Rufus and Frances are not shown together (the book says he fled for beating a man, apparently after Louisa was born abt. 1863/64, never to be heard from again.

The census shows Frances' son, James L. Cox Jr. as head of the household with William, his brother, and Jennie Buffalo (Homa Jean presumably) age 16, and Eliza (Louisa) Buffaloe age 7.

After Rufus Buffaloe fled, Frances married a Francis Ashley on Sept. 28, 1864 in Arkansas Co. Ark.

Rufus's father William Embry Buffaloe is shown with his family and wife Mahala Beasley (Mahaly on the Census).

I have the Buffaloe Decendency Chart on this family.

On RootsWeb's World Connect Project, a Patrick has Frances M. Nobles married James Leonard Cocke (apparently taken from the 1850 Madison Co. Al Census), then married Rufus E. Buffaloe...I emailed him for his "sources" and he said this was put in at the request of a cousin and he couldn't verify his sources.

I do know that Frances M. Cox Buffaloe Cowan, died "after" 1887 because of the Court of Appeals Record that I have.

Frances married many times apparently...so far, I've seen Cox, Buffaloe, Ashley, and Cowan."

"David Calvin Cowan, early surveyor and settler in the eastern part of Llano County, settled along Colorado River near Tow about 1852 and founded a saltworks after being led to a sline spring by friendly Indians. A small community sprung up around the saltworks. When Llano County was formed, David Cowan became the first county judge, and conducted court beneath a large live oak tree near the saltworks, rather than in Llano proper.

The site is now located beneath Lake Buchanan, reportedly under Maxwell's Slough."

and from Ryan Cowan:

"...Yes, I do have "Llano" Gem of the Hill Country" and also a book entitled "Canyon of the Eagles" by C. L. Yarbrough which goes into considerably more detail. The only physical evidence I have seen of the saltworks is one of the 250 gallon iron pots used to boil water from the saline spring until pure salt was left. The pot is on display at the Llano Museum. The saltworks is now beneath Lake Buchanan, but it is my hope that someone out there might have photographs, I have photos of David Calvin Cowan and his wife Elizabeth, along with his mother, Ruth Campbell Cowan, and a number of David's children, so it is perhaps not too much to hope that other photographs might be in existance. If it is not too much trouble, I would love to get xerox copies of the genealogy in the family Bibles. I am particularly curious about the Nobles. David Calvin Cowan's first wife, Martha Elizabeth Thorp Cowan died in 1875, and David, I am told, later married a Frances Nobles, or Frances Nobles Cox. I have no documentation of this."

[Aside: Aubrey Nobles states that he has aerial photos of this area prior to the lake being built. They will be shared as soon as they come available.]]

"COWAN CREEK. Cowan Creek rises about two miles southwest of Tow in extreme northeastern Llano County (at 30°52' N, 98°29' W) and runs east for two miles to its mouth on Lake Buchanan, a half mile from the intersection of Ranch roads 2241 and 3041 (at 30°52' N, 98°27' W). It traverses an area of the Llano basin with flat to rolling terrain, covered with soils ranging from sandy to clay loams that support open stands of live oak and mesquite. David and Gideon Cowan and their mother, Ruth, were the earliest settlers in the Tow area on the west bank of the Colorado River; they arrived in 1852 from Tennessee."

"TOW, TEXAS. Tow is on Farm Road 2241 and the western shore of Lake Buchanan, twenty miles northeast of Llano in northeastern Llano County. It is the oldest community in the county. It began with the arrival in 1852 of David and Gideon Cowan and their mother, Ruth, from Tennessee. The Cowans were directed by local Indians to a salt bed near the Colorado River, which they developed into a successful saltworks. Significant not only in the local economy, the Bluffton-Tow Salt Works was also known as the Confederate States of America Salt Works for its contribution to the Confederate cause. The operation was destroyed by the "salt works cyclone" in 1871. John F. Morgan arrived in the area with his family in 1853 and soon established a hat business, using beaver and other fur trapped locally. When William Tow arrived with his family in 1853, he named the nearby area in which he settled Tow Valley. A post office was established there in 1886 as Tow with Mathew B. Clendenen as postmaster. Tow grew rapidly in the 1970s and 1980s with the addition of retirement and recreation to its economic base. From a population of fifty before 1950, the lakeside town had grown to 305 by 1974, when it had a post office and numerous businesses. In 1990 the population was still 305."

~~~~~~~~
"BLUFFTON, TEXAS. Bluffton, also known as New Bluffton, is on Farm Road 2241 near the western shore of Lake Buchanan twelve miles northeast of Llano in northeastern Llano County. One of the earliest settlements in the region that was to become Llano County, Bluffton originated when Billy Davis settled on the west bank of the Colorado River in 1852. He was followed by a relative, I. B. Maxwell, in 1853. Maxwell reportedly named the settlement for his hometown, Bluffton, Arkansas, perhaps because of the bluffs facing the new community on the east bank of the Colorado River. Bluffton grew to some significance because it was near an early saltworks operated by Davie Cowan and was also near several Colorado River crossings between Burnet and points west. In 1873 a post office was established there with John O. Brown as postmaster. By 1883 Bluffton was a stage stop between Burnet and Llano, with a blacksmith shop, a cotton gin, a hotel, saloons, and other enterprises. In that year a fire, allegedly started by drunken cowboys, destroyed the town. It was rebuilt a half mile north. Although at one time more prosperous than the county seat, Llano, Bluffton was bypassed by the railroad and subsequently declined. When Buchanan Dam (which originally was to be called Bluffton Dam) was completed in 1937, Lake Buchananqv inundated the townsite, and Bluffton moved again, this time five miles west. The new Lake Buchanan also caused the relocation of State Highway 29 between Burnet and Llano, further isolating Bluffton. In 1986 the local economy focused on ranching, tourism, and retirement, and the community had seventy-five residents, a post office, and a store. The population was still reported as seventy-five in 1990."
I am writing a research paper for the Texas Lodge of Research (A masonic lodge for Texas research)
David C. Cowan lived about 2 miles as the crow flies from where I look out over the Colorado from my office.
He was the first Worshipful Master of the Valley Lodge #175 of Hamilton, TX (later changed to Burnet, TX.) He was WM about a decade later, also.
My paper will describe a man who left giant footprints on the Colorado River area, was a pioneer in getting the western movement started again after a long hiatus, was responsible for perhaps as many as a hundred people being employed while he had his Salt Works, and yet, . . . few people here know him.
Of course, there are thousands of D. C. Cowans, men who made a difference, then passed from view. I want to give him his due.
I have visited David's grave in the cemetary across the river. About 30+ miles by road, about 3 by air.
Did he really remarry?
Why was his father and uncle killed?
Was that a factor in he and Gideon and his mother moving?
Thanks again for such a wonderful resource as your website.
Cheers,
(So here is Samuel and your John. Don't know about the age of Samuel. Perhaps they put 42, although it sure looked like 47. Also don't know about the SC birthplace. Francis gives the same birthplace in this census. I think the census taker must have asked the question that implied it was for the father of the subject since Sarah also does not give her birthplace, which is AL, but her mother's.)
Karylon Russell:
The Grover family were from Burnet Co. In 1880 John B. Grover is shown as the son of Sarah Barnes 37 ALA SC GA. John B. is age 19, b. ARK-IL-ALA. They are family # 39. Sarah is a single mother witha a young daughter, Jennie Barnes, age 3, b. TX? ALA. Other children of Sarah's are dtr. Harriet Nobles, age 17, b. Ark TN ALA and Lucretia or Louvecia Nobles, age 11, b. ARK, TN, ALA. From this, it appears that Sarah's children had 3 different fathers, with John B.'s father coming from ILLinois.
I do know that Harriet Nobles was born Arkansas Co., AR 12/22/1866 and died 4/13/1919. She married Samuel Coleman Hammons, and they had 3 children (Clara-Mrs. Tom B. Low; Andus Lewis m. Cora Smith; and Gertrude) Hariet was widowd by 1900, and she is buried at the New Bluffton Cemetery Llano Co., TX. Many of the Low family members left ethe Colorado River area pre 1910 for McCulloch Co., North of Brady, where many are buried at Stacy,,TX. This includes Tom and also John Aaron Low who
MAY have married the Jennie Barnes mentioned above. The 1900 Census in Burnet says John A. Low's wife, named Jennie, was born 2-1877.
1900 Burnet Co. TX # 28/28 says John B. Grover was b. 10-1860 in ARK, that he was 39 and he had been married 7 yrs. Wife, Fannie, was born 5-1875 and had given birth to 2 children, who are listed: Bessie b. 7-1893 and Fay, b. 12-1898
Stacy Cemetery tombstones say Jennie Low's real name was VIRGINIA, b. 1/5/1877 d. 3/16/1928. John Aaron Low, b. 8/6/1877 d. 1/19/1941
